Yogurt isn’t cheap, if you’re like me you love yogurt but are in need of a cheaper option. Making yogurt at home with a yogurt starter is your cheapest option, and very simple to do. So, here is my step-by-step guide to making delicious yogurt. Yogurt is a healthy snack and alternative to many other things that I will share with you today. Let’s get into the recipe!
There are only two ingredients you need to make yogurt at home. I highly recommend keeping these little packets (code “KIERSTENZILE15X” for 15% off) at home when you need them. I go in and out of phases of making yogurt and I love to have them on hand for when I want to batch yogurt for a phase!
You will only need basic kitchen equipment to make this recipe, so don’t worry about having to buy any supplies.
Now the instructions are easy to follow however, do need to be done exactly how I explain them to you or your starter/ yogurt will not turn into that creamy delicious texture.
Don’t forget to save two tablespoons for the next batch that you are going to make.
Pro tip: Even if your activation batch doesn’t set, use it to reculture your next batch and you will see dramatic improvement. Once you get consistently good results, you can scale up your batch. I usually with raw milk have to culture a batch or two to get it cultured well.
That’s it! You have now made your own, effortless yogurt at home. Just a little tidbit after your first batch. When you save those last two tablespoons, that will be used as your yogurt starter. When you heat your milk then cool it back down, you will add the two tablespoons to the milk and stir.
Now that you have all this yogurt! Let’s put together some delicious recipes on how to eat it and also what you can it it on.
My go-to yogurt recipe is fast and easy. You can eat it for breakfast, lunch, or just an enjoyable snack. Don’t bother measuring anything as you want to do this to taste.
Put some yogurt in your bowl. I always like adding some fruit, berries are phenomenal. My favorite is blueberries. Add some blueberries. Preferably frozen blueberries, this way when they defrost some of the juice will mix into the yogurt giving it more flavor than regular blueberries, for sweetener try to avoid sugar. I like raw honey or maple syrup, you can even use sugar alternatives like monkfruit or stevia. If you like you can add granola, oats, and maybe a bit of cinnamon to boost texture and flavor. Make it your own but this combo I can guarantee is delicious.
You can use yogurt to replace many things to make it healthier or give you a more dairy-free option (if you can eat yogurt). Believe it or not, yogurt can replace sour cream quite well. Use it on tacos, any casseroles that normally get sour cream and mashed potatoes. Just about anything you can think of. I love it in potatos because sometimes it can give it more of the sour taste and dare I say, taste better than sour cream!
If you would like to go the sweet route you can use yogurt as a healthy replacement for syrup in many ways. I like to use it as a sugar-free syrup by using either monkfruit or stevia. Mainly I eat pancakes/waffles with yogurt a lot. All you need is a way to sweeten it up and give it a fruity flavor. Simply mix some sugar alternatives into it. Then add a fruit with a stronger flavor, sugar-free canned peaches work great, frozen blueberries, strawberries ( if you use strawberries I recommend you mash them up then put them into yogurt, it will give it more flavor).
Here is some ideas for more additive to add to plain yogurt!
Crafting your own delicious yogurt at home is now more simple and effortless. With just two ingredients and basic kitchen tools, you can produce a creamy, flavorful yogurt superior to store-bought options.
From customizable breakfast bowls to healthier alternatives, yogurt can be used on just about anything. It is an amazing staple to put in your diet and now you can have an abundance of it for you and your family to munch on!
