Everyone is getting into gardening these past few years to become more of a self sustainable family. It has been a HUGE interest to some of you to learn about how to maximize your sustainability to grow your own food all year round in harsher winter states. Extending your garden season and growing fresh veggies throughout the year will help to cut down on your grocery bill! It has made an impact in the summers alone with all the veggies we purchase. We have made our own homemade dog food for about 4+ years now. I try to give them plenty of veggies along with high protein veggies. I can do this at a very low cost, growing my own food!
You probably (just like me) live in a state where there is a blanket of snow on the ground during winter months. Which means you can’t grow lettuce, tomatoes, and green beans outdoors during those months. At least not easily. One way I have found that will help extend your garden season is growing indoors! If you have been following this blog for a while you probably have seen me mention my vertical Garden Towers called GreenStalks. I have grown quite the yield of veggies, mainly tomatoes in them so far. My main reason for investing into them is that they are able to be used indoors during our winter months so I can grow food easily indoors. These GreenStalks are different from most vertical garden towers. Check out my post HERE on why!
I have found these garden towers are very good for beginners as well as easier than planting in buckets. They take way less space, and they water everything together evenly. The only thing to add when using them indoors is grow lights.
A huge thing you will need for extending your garden season is a light source and windows won’t really cut it. Grow lights help the plants grow at a normal rate. There are a lot of windows in our home but grow lights are a must. You want to end your indoor season with a good yield, so investing in these grow lights will help you do that. These lights are the best option I have found for GreenStalks so far!
Seeds have been REALLY hard to come by lately. That’s why it is good to stock up in the winter months or well before April so you can get your pick of things you want or need to grow. This year I decided to purchase mine from True Leaf Market. They have lots of variety and I can buy them all in one place. I always start out with a plan of what my year will look like as far as my garden goals. I usually have a big picture of what I want to grow for the whole year.
You can start extending your garden season by growing indoors this year too. Investing in a system will keep you from having to take longer to learn as a new gardener. Just be sure to plan out your seasons and place your seed orders before they’re all sold out!
