Do you want to start regenerative gardening to create more nutritious foods but don’t know where to get started? Here are my top 4 ways that you can grow your own food with regenerative gardening techniques to ensure you are growing the most nutritious food for your homestead. Managing Weeds without Chemicals or extensive Weeding, Composting to Build up the Soil, Cover Crops & Crop Rotating, No Tilling. Not sure what regenerative gardening or farming is? Here is a past blog I wrote on “What is Regenerative Agriculture?”.
One thing that has kept me from spending HOURS weeding is the newspaper & grass clipping method. You can simply lay down cardboard or newspaper on top of the weeds and add grass clippings or straw on top. This has saved me so much time weeding. You can see here how I have laid them in rows. Adding grass clippings or straw between the plants in the same row works as well, but I chose not to just yet as they are still small and I want to make sure I can find them easily in the garden! You could also use packing paper if you don’t have newspaper or cardboard around regularly.
Building up the soil is going to lead you to more nutritious veggies and fruits, but it takes time. Honestly, I have had pretty good luck the first year with my garden building the soil. I am seeing LOTS of different bugs which is a good sign! Composting will help more worms produce more droppings. Worm poo is like liquid gold for gardeners! It helps the plants thrive. Starting a small compost bin can really help out your soil, you can even make it portable incase you are only staying on the property you have temporarily. It doesn’t take much. Just a Dollar General bin with some holes is all it takes to really start composting on a budget.
Cover crops can help your garden a lot because it helps replenish minerals back into your soil. It also will help root growth, which is a huge win for regenerative gardening or farming in general! The bigger the roots the more nutrients that plant has. Crop rotation is great for pests. It helps build soil, but it also helps keep pests away easier when you rotate your crops.
This is probably the biggest thing that gets overlooked in regenerative gardening. No till is the best way to start your garden for the year. I know it’s soo dreamy to have that fresh tilled garden and perfect rows. Really though if you use the method above of managing weeds with the grass clippings and cardboard, that will work much better. The only time you should really need to till is when you are establishing your garden for the first time ever! You see, when you till soil your turning it all up. The bugs and ecosystem below the topsoil will be disrupted. The goal is to build soil up. The best way to do that is to keep it undisturbed as much as possible. When in doubt just leave it. Nature takes care of itself really. We are conditioned in this industrialized world to work harder not smarter or work against nature to perfect it. We need to let nature take its course and work with it.
These are 4 ways that you can start your own regenerative garden. Honestly the simplest ways are the better ways when it comes to dealing with nature. It’s time for a thriving garden!
