Vinegar is used heavily in our house and we go through a lot of it! Between cleaning and laundry, we go through gallons in a month. Vinegar isn’t too expensive to buy but I found a way to make it for only PENNIES! We would buy vinegar from Costco often and now I can just use what we have to make it.
Making vinegar from fruit just takes some fruit scraps to start. Now it isn’t an overnight process but you can set it and forget it. If you don’t have many scraps you can easily freeze scraps until you are ready to make a small batch or a large one!
There isn’t a fruit really that you can’t turn into fruit vinegar. Most of the time people use orange peels or apple peels but you can use any scraps of fruit. Your goal is just to avoid moldy fruit. That’s why freezing comes in handy because then you can save enough scraps to make a large batch if needed! You can even save the pits of the fruit.
The only tools you need are any kind of mason jar (I prefer these half gallons) and a paper towel with a rubber band. You can use any glass jar you just want to be able to get the fruit back out when it’s done fermenting! I use the regular mason lids but just lightly screw them on so the gasses can escape.
The best thing you can do to keep mold from growing in the fruit vinegar is to keep the fruit covered with the liquids. Also possibly weighing down the fruit with something. You can use a small fermenting weight or a lot of times in the past I have used a shot glass using the lightly screwed-on lid to hold it down under the liquid.
YES! You can drink this vinegar just like you would normal apple cider vinegar.
No. You don’t want to use your homemade vinegar to can with because normally the vinegar you buy from the store is measured in acidity. You would not want to risk the chance of botulism!
There are two ways to store your vinegar. Room Temp or Refrigeration.
Refrigerating vinegar is more to keep the flavor so if you plan to drink it, you will want to ferment it the way you like the taste and then stick it in the fridge to keep the taste longer. This way the fermentation slows down and ferments much slower. Storing this way is for sweet vinegar.
Storing room temperature is for household cleaning and just general use. It will also ferment the longer it is at room temperature because this speeds up the process. The taste would get much more bitter if you plan to drink it. You can definitely still drink it, just be prepared for it to taste pretty strong!
+ There are many ways to use your fruit vinegars! Here is a list of ways to use it.
+ Cleaning – table tops, toilets, sinks, windows
+ Sanitizing animal cages/pens – Really good for chicken coops
+ Add to your chickens water
+ Drinking for health benefits such as gut health
+ Using it in laundry – I like to use apple vinegar for this though. Orange peel vinegar for whites!
+ Rinsing your hair for a natural Malibu treatment at home – Love it for my blonde hair!
These are just some ideas, but there are many more!
I have used natural cleaners for about 6 years now and vinegar can help do a lot of things. When it comes to toilets though I need something extra strong because well…toilets can stink especially with men in a house! I have found this DIY is perfect for cleaning toilets and freshening the house up.
