Cooking at home, we go through a lot of garlic in our house! Typically, I bulk buy garlic powder but another way we save money versus buying small amounts of garlic powder at a time is dehydrating our own. You can do this with a dehydrator or the oven!
Dehydrating garlic is a great way to preserve it so that it lasts longer. It also concentrates the flavor, which means a little goes a long way. When you dehydrate garlic, you are also able to control the level of seasoning in your food better than if you were using garlic that has been dehydrated by someone else.
There are many things to do with dehydrated garlic once it is dehydrated. One is to make your own garlic powder, which is great to have on hand for cooking or as a seasoning for things like roasted veggies. Another is to use dehydrated garlic in soups or stews for flavoring. You can also add it to homemade salad dressings or sprinkle it on top of roasted potatoes. Here are some different things to do with dehydrated garlic.
– Add it to soups for flavor
– Make garlic bread
– Add it to homemade seasoning mixes
– dehydrated garlic powder
If you have a dehydrator (this is what we use until we get the nicer one), this is the best way to dehydrate garlic. You can also use your oven but honestly investing in a dehydrator has been a huge help. We use it so often for all sorts of things. It also saves your electricity bill (especially in the summer) when you dehydrate things often. Here are what you will need.
Once your garlic is dehydrated, you will want to store it in an airtight container. I like to use mason jars (these are good for herbs and labeling) or these reusable silicone bags. Be sure to label your dehydrated garlic with the date so you know how long it will last. Dehydrated garlic typically lasts about a year but depending on how it is stored, it can last even longer.
Here are some tips and tricks to getting your garlic ready to dehydrate!
The outer layer of the garlic is the hardest to get off so make sure while you’re cutting up the garlic to get ALL of the harder outer layers before adding it to the blender.
The smell is very strong so putting it in a well-vented room is best like the garage or porch. I like to just dehydrate my garlic in the fall so we can open all the windows. although the garlic can boost your immune system so then again, the smell is beneficial in the winter if you’re needing to stock up on your garlic powder!
Make sure you dehydrate the garlic at a LOW temp, or it will cause the taste to turn bitter and rancid tasting. No one wants that! It is better to do a low temp and long dehydration process with garlic.
It’s a really simple process and you can make a good amount at once!
